Case Study

Implementation of DMS Suite R 11.2 with over 8000 desktops.

Client
Client is a leading IT/ITES an Indian multinational based at Mumbai with offices spread throughout the globe.  In India they have offices / development centers in Chennai and Pune.

Task
Client has a very complex environment including development centers and offshore center as required by his business process.  Each center has infrastructure to support multiple projects in terms of desktops, servers and network.  With the growing population of desktops across the enterprise, client was facing hardship in maintaining up-to-date IT Asset information, both for internal assessment and audit purposes. It was a difficult, complex and time consuming process to deliver standard software package to all the desktops complying with project / security requirements. Besides this, the client also wanted the proposed solution to cater to redundancy and application availability through clustering.

Client’s security processes required configuration and customization to implement policies at the desktops and audit enforcement of policies in the desktops.  Gemini was asked to remember the requirements to figure out a solution to meet the client's aspiration.
This engagement was designed to create and deploy CA "best practices" based architecture, implementation and test plan for Unicenter Desktop management r11 in the Customer's environment in support of the Customer's defined business and technology objectives and within specific parameters as outlined in the project document.  Faced with several resistances in terms of complexity and multiplicity of applications across regions, Gemini enabled smooth knowledge transition and established a common framework across locations.

Implementation
The implementation included a DMS DB server at the HQ with Enterprise domain manager in cluster mode. The domain managers were distributed between HQ and specific locations. Server scalability was planned at different logical and physical network

Highlights of the Project
Special features of the project include high levels of policy customizations, fine tuning and tweaking of MIS reports, asset reports and consolidation of asset information physically separated networks. Notifications through SMS and email were enabled apart from trouble ticket management through integration with service desk.

End user benefits
Client expressed higher satisfaction since his pain points were addressed and better visibility was provided into his IT Assets, especially customized MIS reports

Project on Automation for State-owned Transport Corporation.

Client

Client is a state-owned transport corporation taking care of transport needs of people in metros by way of bus pass for the student community and public at large. The project falls in to the category BOOT (Build, Own, Operate, Transfer). This prestigious project was awarded to Gemini. The client was looking for a company with fantabulous track record and good credentials who could do this and maintain over a defined period of BOOT.

Task

The objective of the project was to connect different bus depots spread over geographically. The objective also included better visibility of bus pass management. The project is of high importance from the public point of view and to ease out peak rush

The challenge

Gemini’s proven record of handling many government projects efficiently before had come in handy for completing this project. Gemini had to complete strenuous exercise by going to the drawing board to come out with a comprehensive and optimized LAN and WAN design for providing the required connectivity. It was also forced to understand the existing bus pass mechanism practiced over the years. Change management was equally an important issue. Gemini had to design right and ambient environment for the success of the project.

Implementation

Scope of the implementation included setting up Datacenter with High-end Servers and UPS, selection of an optimal central router, and firewall to connect various depots, and provide WAN Connectivity to different centers. Gemini’s commitment to CSR ensured that majority of staff employed in the project were from downtrodden families, with majority of them being women. Gemini also encouraged physically handicapped throughout the operations.

End-user benefits:

Since each depot’s link is available, bus pass issuing staff can get the details at the click of a mouse. Single point MIS reports are made possible.

Implementation of DOTSOFT for major telecommunication company

Client

The client is India’s leading Telecommunications Company entrusted Gemini the work of Wide Area Networking (WAN) along with DOTSOFT Software to its Secondary Switching Areas.

DOTSOFT is an Integrated Database Application Software for Commercial Activities, Customer Services, Cash Counters, Telecom Billing & Accounting, FRS (Fault Repair System) and DQ (Directory Enquiry). The system is based on Client-Server technology, in which front end tool is D2K & backend is Oracle 9i on Redhat Linux AS4 with 200GB database size.

Situation

The main aim was to connect various Secondary Switching Areas to server for the purpose of centralized billing facilitating the subscribers to pay in any center. If any customer has not received bill for a particular month they were approaching the concerned SSA’s to get the details. They were having separate server for each SSA and were getting details confining to their area only. After implementation of DOTSOFT, they can have access to any of the SSA to get necessary details. Management was getting MIS from each SSA and consolidation was a time consuming process.

Approach

The project was divided into two phases. The phase I of the project covered five SSAs. The project was designed & implemented end-to-end by Gemini; which involves setting up of a Central Data Center, 13 SSA headquarters, 121 SDCA headquarters and 140 cash collection centers and more than 150 commercial counters across the state.

The Central Data Center implementation includes setting up of two Enterprise Class Servers running Redhat Enterprise Linux AS 4.0 with Clustering, Storage Area Network (SAN), SAN switches, D-Link managed 48 port switch, RAS, NMS Server, Back up
Server, Backup drives like LTO & LTP etc. In central, we have connected all the remote location through E1 (2Mbps) modem.

In the second phase, the remaining SSAs were connected.

Gemini has deployed 5 Dotsoft Trained Engineers and another 7 Network Engineers for this project at all the SSAs.

Implementation

Gemini has successfully implemented the following:

  • Operating system RHEL AS4 installation and configuration.
  • Oracle 9i Database Server & Client Installation on Linux as well as Windows.
  • Implemented Load-balancing through Oracle Real Application Clustering (RAC).
  • Data Conversion & Migration from Previous System Trichur- CTRA (based on Oracle 7.3) to new system Dotsoft (based on Oracle 9.2).
  • Data-mapping between Trichur & DotSoft after though study of both systems.
  • Installed Dell PowerEdge 7250 servers with Itanium processor.
  • Used Dell Emc2 SAN Device for database storage.
  • Providing In-depth Technical Training to the BSNL Officials on DotSoft Functionality.
  • Providing assistance in Database Backup/ Recovery & Performance Tuning.
  • Support for Landline, WLL & Broadband Bill Processing as well as Ledger Processing.
  • Providing interactive support to more than 1000 end-users with 24*7 production environment.

Client Benefit

After implementation of the program, subscribers are able to pay their bill at any of the Secondary Switching Areas. After automation, the workload is evenly distributed. Top Management can get MIS of different areas from the centralized server at one point and waiting for the same from different areas and calling them is a distant past.
