Case Study- Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) LT Billing Project-Overview.

Project Overview:

The “PROJECT BEST” (Billing Energy Services in TNEB) is a project of online Billing of Domestic consumers. The project is for a different regions spread across Tamil Nadu.

Datacentre:

In each region, one Data Centre has been set up with two Servers (one primary and one secondary), 2 Nos of Layer 3 Switches connected to each other, 2 Fibre channel switches with one centralized SAN and one core router. All the networking equipments are in redundant mode. The Network Management Software (NMS) will manage the whole network. Oracle based database and application software is loaded in central server. All the collection centres are provided computers loaded with Linux burnt EPROMS.

Network:

The network connectivity is designed with both wireless and wireline technologies. The entire region is divided with 4 or 5 aggregation points and all the aggregation points are connected to the data centre with 2 Mbps bandwidth with Mesh connectivity with each other for redundancy. Connectivity from collection centres to aggregation points is Star type and aggregation points to the data centre are a mesh type. Every data from the collection center will directly go to the data centre. All the collection centres are connected with back up.

MADRAS UNIVERSITY CAMPUS AREA NETWORK - AN OVERVIEW

The Madras University Campus Area Network (MU CAN) has been designed & implemented by Gemini with the sole aim of providing smooth, high speed network access to resources like Internet, Mails, Reference books, Manuals, News letters, Periodicals etc. & to facilitate e-learning , e-governance, tele-education through Video conferencing, Voice over IP (VoIP) etc.

Description: The Madras University CAN comprises 4 campus viz Chepauk, Marina, Guindy & Taramani. In each campus, the individual departments have been networked by Gigabit (1000 Mbps) fiber Optic  backbone & UTP back bones. Both the Fiber & UTP back bones are terminated in a central location (L3 Switch) in each campus. A Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) network connectivity is provided to individual staff of every department through UTP cable from the nearest L2 Switch.

The MU CAN implementation include setting up of 4 aggregation points one each in every campus. The server rooms & internet center of the different campus have been used as aggregation points for the fiber / UTP back bones. The distribution switches have been placed at appropriate location in each department block to take care of individual connectivity. A short hop wireless connectivity was also established as LAN extension in Chepauk campus to connect the Ramanujam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics with the Main Campus.

Top of the line active components like Nortel for L2 & L3 Switches, Cisco for Routers & Firewalls have been deployed & integrated in all the 4 campus. The end to end passive components have been taken care by using Finolex OFCs, UTPs, Jack Panels, LIUs, connectors, couplers etc., The network monitoring of all the campus is performed using CAs Unicentre NSM.
